Those of you reading through these blogs might have noticed, there’s not a lot of pre-planning with this trip. Most of the time (except Peru), Rebecca and I are winging it. Stopping in one place or another just as long as we feel like it, then moving on to the next. I have to say I like both winging it and pre-planning.  Makes things interesting!

FYI: If you want to skip forward to our Amazon adventure in Peru, here’s the link.

I never expected to see a squirrel, but here it is.  Taken
at our hostel.

A little longer in Santa Teresa

Private shuttles to Monteverde are too expensive, and the group shuttles for today are full. So, Rebecca and I have signed up for one tomorrow to take us out of the hot beach into the cool mountain air.

For today we just took it easy on the beach. Then two Frenchmen and a French Canadian, Guillaume made us dinner at the hostel.  I made dessert – cinnamon apples with vanilla ice cream. I know, it’s a tough life.

Next Day to Monteverde

Early morning, Guillaume heads out to his next destination. We were in the co-ed bunk room so I wave goodbye as he quietly walks out. The soft sound of snores around us.

At 8:30 AM Rebecca and I happily waited for our shuttle to arrive and whisk us away to cooler

environs. By 9:30 AM the sun was higher, hotter and we were sagging and there was still no sign of shuttle or our travel agent. Luckily, one of the workers from our hostel came to help us and found our travel agent.

As it turned out the shuttle driver never received our information, so the travel agent apologized and signed us up for the 2:00 PM shuttle.

The hostel let us hang around in the hammocks until our next shuttle. I know I’m going to miss hammocks back home!

Some days are better than others

To get from Santa Teresa to Monteverde it takes a shuttle, a ferry, then a shuttle, and then another shuttle.

And, I have to admit I was very emotional today. It didn’t help that things kept going wrong. At our last shuttle switch, I started to sit down and some woman approaches the shuttle and starts screaming at me. Apparently, I had taken her seat. Normally I’m calm and cool and don’t take things personally. But instead, I cried silently. Tiny tears running down my face as I sat shotgun.  Brother, emotions!

A Long Road to Monteverde

Anyway, she lost out. Because I got the front seat, I didn’t have to be squished next to anyone and I had the full force of the air conditioning on that super hot day. That brought back my happy self, and I hoped she was sweating it in the back. (So I guess I’m also a little vindictive).

Looks innocent, doesn’t he?  This little guy at Cabinas Eddy
kept trying to tug Rebecca’s socks off.

As we were passing through a town, we saw a man knock a monkey out of a tree with a pineapple. Terrible, right?

Rebecca thinks that they had good intentions toward the monkey. I don’t think so. That was quite a hit with that pineapple, and to fall all that way out of the tree seemed pretty violent.

The road up to Monteverde was really long, steep, and rocky. From what I’ve read, it’s kept that way to limit the number of visitors. I was really glad we didn’t take public transportation because it takes the public bus hours to reach the top of the mountain and our group shuttle practically rocketed past the lumbering bus as it chugged its way up.

Freddy, the proprietor at Cabinas Eddy was so helpful in letting us know about the local area, things to do, and our room is just perfect. Tomorrow is Zip Lining at Cloud Forest Exploration!
