Along the beach South of Santa Teresa |
Rebecca and I decided to hike the beach toward and past the tip of the Nicoya Pennisula to find an Island off of Cabuya. According to Guillaume, at low tide, one can walk to the island and check out the cemetery, etc.
Most normal people would probably take a taxi to the closest location, but Rebecca and I aren’t normal. We decided we’ll spend the day on the gorgeous beaches.
Beach hiking makes great exercise in Santa Teresa
FYI, walking on a beach is a lot harder than hiking through the woods. It was slow going on the sand and in other sections we were climbing around and over rocks to get to the next section of beach. It was hot, and the sun was beating down, but it was also one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen (so far.)
At mid-afternoon, we get a little overheated, but that’s the great thing about the beach. We stripped down to our bathing suits and went swimming in the cool ocean.
Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve worth a visit
I was fascinated with how this hibiscus flower was being suspended over the spider web. |
On our hike, we eventually reached a point where we could see a road in the woods that appeared to follow the beach. So, we decided to take it to get out of the sun. By the time we could see the tip of the peninsula, it was late in the afternoon. We had run out of time.
This was our view when we turned back – that island is at the tip of the peninsula |
So we turned around and followed the road back. Turns out we had inadvertently found our way into the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. Such a beautiful area! When we got to the exit of the reserve, we found a sign that said ‘no trespassers.’ Ooops! We wondered why a truck driver and his companions gave us weird looks as they drove by. Ah well, it was worth the view.
In any case, we made our way back to town fairly quickly via the road. Every car and motorcycle that went by kicked up a cloud of dust. Our choices were either a long, hot walk in the sun or take the dusty road in partial shade. We stuck to the shade.
Be in the Know: If you are walking or taking an open vehicle from one town to another, definitely plan on wearing a bandana or something to protect yourself from the thick dust thrown up by vehicles.
We hope to move on tomorrow to our next destination, Monteverde.
